The President of the Ghana Boxing Writers Association of Ghana (BWAG), Mr. Sammy Heywood Okine has congratulated the Ghana senior national football team, Black Stars for their gallant display in Kumasi and Abuja to qualify for their 4th FIFA World Cup to be held in Qatar.
He commended other sports disciplines that have qualified for 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, like Hockey who qualified for the first time both male and female, Table Tennis male team, Weighlifting, Beach Volleyball female and Boxing.
The Black Stars beat arch rivals the Super Eagles of Nigeria on Tuesday by an away goal from deputy skipper, Thomas Partey who led the young selection by Coach Otto Addo to a remarkable success in the World Cup Playoffs.
After drawing in Kumasi with a jammed crowd, the twinkling new set of stars showed talent, tactical discipline and tenacity to draw against a star studded opposition, but scrapped through with a 1-1 result.
According to Sammy Heywood Okine who is a top sports journalist and Country Director of African Sports Media Network and indeed the only Ghanaian journalist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Ghana has what it takes to be among the big boys in football.
He commended the Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku for listening to the football people in making amends to the technical staff of the team which has resulted in the qualification.
Mr. Okine hailed the technical team comprising Otto Addo, Chris Houghton, Mashoud Dramani and George Boateng.
He also thanked all Ghanaians for the unflinching support for the Black Stars.
On March 29, 2022 Otto Addo made his as the second coach to lead Ghana to the FIFA World Cup.
President of the Ghana Ghana Football Association, Mr. Kurt Okraku is also in the history books as under his reign Ghana Football went to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Others African countries that have qualified to the World Cup are Senegal, Morocco, Tunisia and Cameroon.
Ghana has been to the World Cup in 2006 (Germany), 2010 (South Africa) 2014 (Brazil), but missed 2018 (Russia).
"It is good Ghana is back to the FIFA World Cup, qualifying to Qatar 2022 brings a lot to the nation, especially the youth and we must continue to encourage sports people to put Ghana on the world sports map " Sammy who is popularly known as ‘General One’ said.
