The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has engaged the Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Alhaji Mahmoud Bawumia at the Jubilee House on a wide range of issues .

Led by it’s President Kwabena Yeboah, the mother body of Sports journalists in Ghana, SWAG commiserated with the veep on the demise of his mother and consoled him for the loss.

Kwabena Yeboah who was accompanied by his vice Maurice Quansah,General Secretary Charles Osei Asibey and his deputy Thomas Boakye-Agyeman also discussed few issues with the Vice President especially the state of Ghana Sports among others .

Dr. Bawumia expressed his happiness at meeting the group,thanked SWAG for the visit and reiterated the need for more of such meetings, asking SWAG to continue the watchdog role it’s played over the years and commended them for the SWAG awards, which is the longest running awards event in Ghana .

Present at the meeting was the Secretary to the veep Mr. Augustine Blay and Special Assistant to the Vice President Tamimu Issah, himself a member of of SWAG and a former deputy spokesperson of the Ghana Football Association .

Ghana Prisons Officer and boxer, Musah Rahman Lawson was the happiest man on Sunday at Akropong when he beat Bernard Ayitey Tagoe via a round two TKO to become the new Ghana  Super Welterweight Champion.

The event put up by S3 Promotions was highly attended and the boxers on the bill put up marvelous display of boxing.

Welterweight Nicholas Tagoe won by Rd 3 KO against Nathaniel Sosu.

Super Light, Matthias Nguah defeated Felix Crabbe in round four, while Henry Malm won via Rd 2 KO over Richard Mankattah in their Super Welterweight clash.

Super Middleweight Haruna Umaru beat John Mensah in round one, while Flyweight Isaac Aryeetey also won by a round 4 TKO over Jacob Tackie.

Super Fly Adam Hadeem Salamu beat Alfred Quaye in two rounds while Flyweight Mohammed "Golden Boy" Aryeetey won by a round three knock out against Dennis Nyarko.

Flyweight Michael "Black Spider" Abban defeated Emmanuel Laryea who got injured.

Former World Title Challenger Maxwell Awuku shrugged of a gallant challenge from Moses Dodzi to win in round five.

Budding talent, Prince ‘The Buzz’ Larbie  was the toast of fans as he thrilled them with his scintillating artistry in an exhibition bout.

The maiden show powered by S3 Promotions / Box Office was very successful.

The Chief Of Akropong and Sports Minister Hon. Mustapha Yusif were among the dignitaries who graced the show.

Other were MC Sam Gold, King Promise, Mugeez and Bukom Banku.

Holy Dorgbetor claims national featherweight title

Robert Quaye aka “Stopper” needed only one round to stop Nathaniel Nukpe in the main of the “Danger Zone” event which took place last Saturday evening at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra.

The unbeaten Quaye won the UBO super lightweight title, and said it will inspire him to go for the bigger belts.

Quaye started the fight fiercely by attacking his opponent with wild blows and caught him on the canvas. The bombardment was enough for Nukpe to call it quits.

Nukpe told the media he was refered to as a Togolese instead of being Ghanaian, by the ring announcer, so he decided to quit the bout.

His decision to stop fighting surprised members of the audience, especially Ace Power Promotions officials.

Mr. Isaac Amankwah, General Manager of ACE Power Promotions, described the incident as mistaken identity and unfortunate.

Quaye bettered his record to 20-0, (17 KOs), while Nukpe dropped to 13-8-1 (13 KOs).

Featherweight boxers, Holy Dorgbetor (8-0, 5 KOs) and Success Tetteh (10-3, 8 KOs) put up a great performance which earned Dorgbetor a 12-round unanimous decision win to win the national featherweight and UBO titles.

All three judges; Michael Neequaye, Clement Ashong and Shadrack Acquaye scored for Dorgbetor.

 “This is a big win for me and I’m glad to have won these great titles” Dorgbetor said after the fight.

Defeated Tetteh called for a rematch, but Dorgbetor said he has to move on to face bigger challenges.

Tanzania’s Loren Japhet (11-5-2, 3 KOs) got a second-round knockout win over Nigerian Sherif Kareem (9-4, 7 KOs) in their super bantamweight contest, while Raphael King stopped Emmanuel Allotey in round five of a welterweight contest.

Victor Kuwornu also won with an eighth-round technical knockout win over Armah Quaye, while light heavyweight Ahmed Abdula defeated James Owoo in round two.

Emmanuel Quartey aka “Akufo-Addo” beat Billy Quaye in round two in their super featherweight fight.

Ghana will join other Commonwealth nations to display the Queen’s Baton to mark the preparations for the next Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022.

According to the Commonwealth Games Association Ghana, the Baton will arrive in Accra on October 25 from Sierra Leone, and the first person to hold it will be President Nana Akufo Addo at the Jubilee House on October 26.

The Baton Relay will then start in Ghana, moving from the Liberation Circle through Opeibea House, Stanbic Heights, Airport Bypass Road, Aviation, El Wak to Tema, Valco Round About, Harbour and other places in the popular town which is known as center of Ghana.

On the second day, October 27, the Baton will move to the Garden City of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region to the Manhyia Palace, where the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will receive it, and hand it over to other dignitaries at Rattay Park, Bonwire Tourist Center and Adinkra Village at Ntonsu.

Many dignitaries have been identified to handle the Baton in Kumasi before it moves to Cameroun.

In Ghana, a committee has been planning for the reception and relay. They include sports federations presidents Isaac Duah (Tennis), Michael Ayeh (GES), Mohammed Mahadi (Fencing), Delphina Quaye (Swimming), Melvin Brown (Karate Do), Albert Frimpong (Baseball), Abdul Hayye Yartey (Bodybuilding) and Fred Otu Lartey (Taekwondo) who is the chairman.

Meanwhile, President of Commonwealth Games Association Ghana (CGA), Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah has called on Ghanaian sports fans to support the Relay to make the event memorable and successful.

Some popular figures including politicians, sportsmen and musicians have been lined up to pass on the Queen’s Baton.

Raymond Atsu who took part in the Open Water swimming competition at the Bukom International Pool on Sunday during the 14th CANA African Swimming Championship has appealed to the sports authorities to support young swimmers to have interest in the sport and encouragement to compete at the highest level.

Speaking to Yours Truly after he failed to complete the 3 kilometers race in water,  he admitted that he is aging and that could be his last event.

Atsu has represented Ghana in many international swimming competitions and believes there are many young people who can be trained to become champions.

He commended the Ghana Swimming Association for bringing the 14th CANA African Swimming Championship to Accra and hoped that more events would be held in Ghana.

According to him, he has not trained enough for the big competition a day that was the reason why he could not finish and apologized to his fans and admirers.

He also thanked all the sponsors and media who supported the competition which came to Ghana for the first time.

The Tema based swimmers said he has a club and he is training a few young swimmers to take over from him after he retires

The President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah has congratulated the former President of the Ghana Baseball and Softball Association, Mr. Albert K. Frimpong for his devoted and dedicated service to the sport.

"As president of the Ghana Olympic Committee I am very proud of you. You have been so dedicated to the development and promotion of Baseball in Ghana and Africa for almost thirty five years. You have served Ghana sports so well. You are one of the most dedicated, selfless and hardworking sports administrators in Ghana. The GOC is so proud of you. Your passionate and love for the less privileged,  sports and youth is simply exceptional. I look forward to many more greater feats in as you go on to take up new challenges. You can always count on my full support and assistance always.

"We are all very proud of you. The best is yet to come." said Ben Nunoo Mensah.

Mr. Albert K. Frimpong who is Chairman of the Marketing and Sponsorship Committee of the Ghana Olympic Committee may be seeking the highest position on the continent of Africa in Baseball.

He told Yours Truly the sport deserves to be pushed forward and people with experience and expertise are needed.

He thanked the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), the National Sports Authority, the media and everyone who has supported and contributed to the development and promotion of Baseball in Ghana.

President of CANA Africa, Mr. Sam Ramsamy has congratulated the Ghana Swimming Association (GSA) for successfully hosting the 14th CANA Africa Juniors and Seniors  Swimming and Open Water Championships.

The highly respected South African spent some days in Ghana to witness the organization of the competitions which took place at the Bukom International Pool at the Trust Sports Emporium in Accra.

“I am highly impressed” he told Yours Truly when quizzed on the general organization of the week long championship.

The President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah who ensured that his ANOCA colleague enjoyed the hospitality of Ghana said the event was great and has inspired many Ghanaians to love swimming.

He commended the Team South Africa who swept most of the medals, and praised countries like Egypt, Morocco and Senegal who performed well.

He praised Abeiku Jackson for climbing the medals podium twice as he placed second and third in his events.

President of the Ghana Swimming Association, Mrs. Delphina Quaye also hailed Team Ghana which is made up of young swimmers and wished them a brighter future.

Mrs. Helena Williams, a sports consultant and executive member of the Ghana Swimming Association (GSA) has described the 14th CANA African Juniors and Seniors  Swimming and Open Water Championship as wonderful.

The FINA international official and CAF match commissioner said the event was well organized and all the participants behaved well by complying with all covid - 19 protocols and swimming regulations.

She commended her colleagues at the GSA and the sponsors of the competition as well as the media partners and the general public who came to support.

According to the experienced sports administrator and mentor, Ghana could not win many medals because they could not get the full compliment of swimmers as most were students in their final year, so they were not released by their schools.

She expressed that, the coaches and technical experts have learnt a lot and they are going to implement to raise the standard of swimming in Ghana.

She hailed the young swimmers from other African countries who came to make the competition possible and exciting.

Mrs. Williams advised that officials who gain experience in organizing such events must be used in future events like the 2023 African Games coming up and other international assignments.

She also called on government to support the least financed sports like swimming as it can earn the nation more medals at the next African Games.

Boxers fighting on the Odwira Fight Night bill weighed in on Saturday at The GYM in Accra.

However there were some surprises as some boxers chickened out, and did not attend the weigh in.

Experienced Stephen Abbey, the man who loves to fight, with 36 bouts of showmanship was at the weigh in but Jacob Dickson was no where to be found.

They are to meet for the national cruiserweight title.

Abbey's coach Nii Armah Tagoe of Black Panthers Gym assured fans of a great fight, as they hope to get an opponent for an exhibition bout.

According to 3S Promotions, 10 bouts will be staged at Akropong in the Eastern Region on Sunday, October 17, 2021.

Two National titles will be at stake; cruiserweight and super welterweight, and eight others for the chiefs and people of  Akropong and Akwapim to celebrate their annual Odwira festival.

The event comes off at the Forecourt of chief’s palace and no gate fees will be charged.

Musah Lawson will face Ben Tagoe as Victor Kemavor pulled out at the last minute.

Musah Lawson, a Prisons Officer who featured for the Black Bombers has a pro record of 5 wins, all by KOs. He thanked all who helped him to pass through the ranks and now he has a chance to beome a national champion.

Messrs Henry Welbeck and Godfred Lartey, directors of S3 Promotions promised a fascinating package for boxing fans.

Sponsor of the event, Upplaus Consulting representative, Debbie said the people of Akwapim are warriors, that is why they love boxing, and prays for a wonderful show.  She assured that all Covid-19 protocols will be observed.

The weigh-in for ACE Power Promotions' Danger Zone Bill which comes off on Saturday October 16 took place at the La-Palm Royal Beach Hotel on Friday October 15.

The top liner is the UBO international super lightweight championship between Robert Quaye and Nathaniel Nukpe.

Hopeful Holy Dorgbetor weighed 125.5lbs against Success Tetteh at 125.7lbs. they clash for the UBO intercontinental and Ghana national featherweight championship over 10 rounds.

Emmanuel Martey weighed 161.2lbs against Naimou Aziz Samson who was 159.2lbs for a Middleweight contest - 10 rounds.

Loren Japhet from Tanzania was 121lbs against Sheriff Kareem of Nigeria who weighed 119lbs in an international super bantamweight contest over 8 rounds.
