Selected messages will be displayed at venues during the Games ©Tokyo 2020

Tokyo 2020 has announced plans for a "Share the Passion" project, which will allow athletes' family members and fans to send messages during the Olympic and Paralympic Games to display at venues.

The initiative follows the decision not to allow overseas spectators, including family members, to attend the Games amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

"When we announced in March that overseas spectators would unfortunately not be able to come to Japan for the Games, we also said that we would think of ways to help people around the world share their support for the athletes," said Seiko Hashimoto, Tokyo 2020 President.

"Although the spectator seats may not be full, the many videos and messages shared through the Tokyo 2020 Share the Passion project and displayed on the big screen will fill the venues with support from around the world, and I am sure that it will further motivate the athletes as they compete.

"In a world in which many people have been separated from each other by the COVID-19 pandemic, I believe that the Tokyo 2020 Games will help us renew our bonds with each other.

"We are all stronger together, and sport has the power to help bring the world together again.

"I hope that through these initiatives, we can share the special moments of the Games with as many as possible in a real spirit of solidarity.

"I am looking forward to many people around the world taking this opportunity to be a part of the Games and deliver their messages of support to the athletes."

Tokyo 2020 said three types of supportive messages from fans around the world can be submitted via various social media channels.

These will include videos with movements matching the rhythm of a "2020beat", videos featuring original cheers or support messages and text messages of support.

A selection of videos and messages will be shown on screens at some of the Tokyo 2020 competition venues.

Organisers say the Tokyo 2020beat project was created from a range of 1,000 different sound samples, and reflects the themes of sports, Japanese culture, daily life and nature.

Five different rhythms were compiled using Intel's AI technology.

As part of the #2020beat social media campaign, fans have been invited to film themselves performing to the rhythm while using the hashtag #2020beat.

The campaign was temporarily suspended but has been relaunched as part of the Share the Passion project.

The initiative is being supported by the Alibaba Cloud and Intel Corporation, which are part of the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) The Olympic Partner (TOP) Programme.

"As a worldwide partner of the IOC, we aim to leverage our proven cloud technology to support a digitally transformed Games," said Unique Song, Alibaba Cloud Japan's country manager.

"As part of our mission, we also want to support the athletes through the Games despite the challenges caused by the pandemic."

Messages of support and original videos can be submitted by using the hashtag #DearAthletes.

Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) have also confirmed a "fan engagement" initiative, which will provide an online "cheer map" and "fan video wall" bringing audience participation direct to the venues.

Fans worldwide will be able to cheer on their country via web or mobile, and upload selfie videos which could appear on screens at selected venues.

"For Tokyo 2020, we are proud to be launching a pilot project that will facilitate remote fan engagement directly with the athletes within the venues, as well as with other fans worldwide," said Yiannis Exarchos, OBS chief executive.

"Working with Tokyo 2020 and our broadcast partners, OBS has developed a suite of digital tools that will not only allow friends and family to engage with athletes within the venue, but also encourage fans all over the world to be actively involved in supporting their national heroes."

OBS will be supporting the previously announced "athlete moment" station at selected venues.

This will allow athletes to connect live with friends and family right after the competition ends.

The President of CAF, Dr Patrice Motsepe has issued a statement outlining the activities and governance and other changes that the new CAF leadership is introducing since their election in March 2021; to make African football globally competitive and self-sustaining.

It became apparent to the new leadership of CAF after conducting several meetings with current and potential sponsors, the private sector, some African Heads of State and Government ministers and stakeholders in football; that they have had a poor and negative perception of CAF concerning its adherence to governance, auditing, ethical, financial and management good practices.

These negative perceptions may, to some extent, be confirmed by the incriminating and damning Price Waterhouse Coopers (“PWC”) CAF Interim Report which identified certain irregular, unethical and improper transactions and conduct. This Report was circulated to the CAF Member Associations in May 2021.

CAF is committed to implementing the recommendations of the Final PWC CAF Report and ensuring that the irregular, unethical and improper transactions and behaviour do not happen again.

This should result in CAF being regarded and viewed as a respected Confederation that implements and adheres to governance, auditing, ethics, financial and management global best practices; making it attractive to current and potential new sponsors and partners.

It is also important that the quality of the competitions that CAF hosts are globally competitive and appealing to spectators, viewers and interested parties in Africa and globally.

In this regard steps are being taken to:

improve the efficiency and professionalism of CAF’s Competitions and its staff

invest in African football infrastructure and ensuring that in every CAF Member Association there is a FIFA approved stadium

build and strengthen relationships with current and potential sponsors and partners

retain and employ appropriately qualified and skilled personnel

invest in the youth and in the future of African football

develop and grow women’s football

protect the integrity and professionalising refereeing

introduce appropriately priced video assistant referees (‘VAR’)

Since March 2021 several meetings were conducted in Africa and globally to advance and promote the interest of CAF and its Member Associations and also to build relationships and partnerships with current and potential sponsors, African Heads of State and their Governments, private and public corporations and other African and global stakeholders.

The African Heads of State with whom meetings were conducted and whose countries were visited by the CAF leadership are:

President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (“DRC”). Current Chairman of the African Union (“AU”)

President Alassane Ouattara of Ivory Coast

President George Weah of Liberia

President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone

President Macky Sall of Senegal

President Paul Kagame of Rwanda

Developing and promoting football at schools and investing in the youth is imperative for the future of African football.

CAF and FIFA had a successful launch of the pilot project of the CAF Pan-African Schools Football Championship in Kinshasa which was attended by President Félix Tshisekedi and several of his Ministers and other football stakeholders.

This was followed by a humble donation of USD 10 million from the Motsepe Foundation to the CAF Pan-African Schools Football Championship. The donation is intended to be used as prize money for the winners of the 6 CAF Zonal Schools Football Competition and the ultimate champion of the CAF Pan-African Schools Football Championship.

We are also concerned about some of the contracts and agreements that CAF concluded in the past.

In certain agreements, as disclosed in the PWC CAF Interim Report, payments were made to middle men and third parties which are incomprehensible and unacceptable. These issues cannot be discussed in public as CAF has obligations of privacy and non-disclosure in these agreements.

EXCO may have to discuss and consider new CAF competitions which may generate additional funding or income for CAF, its Member Associations and bodies and also contribute to African football becoming globally competitive and self-sustaining.

In this regard, we are assessing and in preliminary discussions to start an inclusive and broadly supported and beneficial CAF African Super League. We have been following the attempts by some top European clubs to form a Euro Super League and will learn from their experience and pitfalls.

The issues relating to CAF and its media and broadcasting rights are also receiving serious attention as this is an important source of funding and finance for CAF, its Member Associations and bodies.

The President of CAF, Dr Patrice Motsepe, will continue visiting several Member Associations in their countries to advance and promote their interest and the interest of CAF and also to assist with building relationships and partnerships for the Member Associations with their Governments and potential sponsors.

There is a lot of work that needs to be done over the next few months and years to implement the objectives and goals of CAF, as stated, inter alia, in the amended “CAF 10 Point Action Plan”.

The unity and commitment of CAF’s Member Associations and stakeholders, as well as the interventions and changes that are being introduced by the new leadership is creating optimism and confidence that African football will, over the medium to long term, succeed and become globally competitive and self-supporting.

Dr Patrice Motsepe would like to thank the members of EXCO, the CAF Vice-Presidents, the Member Association Presidents and leadership, the 6 Zonal Presidents, FIFA and in particular President Gianni Infantino, the CAF Secretariat and Mr Veron Mosengo-Omba, the members of the CAF Standing Committees, African Heads of State and their Governments, our sponsors and partners and all stakeholders for their cooperation, support and commitment to CAF.

The Hearts of Oak secretariat in Accra was besieged by some crazy soccer fans on Friday following a mad rush for tickets ahead of the much-anticipated Ghana Premier League Super Clash between giants Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko at the Accra Stadium on Sunday.

Supporters of the two biggest clubs in the country thronged the Hearts offices and some designated sale outlets in a frantic bid to secure tickets for the all-important match of the season.

Reports say over 10,000 match tickets for the encounter which went on sale on Friday morning have been sold out in just one hour.

The Phobians were given the green light by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), National Sports Authority, and Ministry of Youth and Sports to sell advanced tickets to avoid congestion and also ensure strict compliance to the COVID-19 protocols at the Accra Stadium on the matchday.

However, fans were spotted forming long queues at the Hearts secretariat and some sales outlets in anticipation of getting advanced tickets for the big game which could determine the champions of the 2020/2021 league season.

The Ampe Association of Ghana on Thursday organized a seminar for officials at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The participants were taken through the rules and regulations governing the traditional sport which is played mostly by females all over Ghana.

Secretary General of the association, Miss Agnes Abefe said Ampe is being observed by some international bodies like the Commonwealth Games and IOC and they want to push so that it is played as a demonstration during the 13th African Games to be hosted in Ghana in 2023.

Pupils from St. Banarbas Anglican JHS performed the demonstration at the workshop.

The president of Women Sports Association of Ghana WOSPAG, Mrs. Joyce Mahama who oversees the Ampe Association commended the officials and urged them to spread the good news about Ampe as it has come to stay.

She appealed to the media to promote the most popular traditional sport in Ghana.

Mrs. Mahama called on young girls to engage in active sports, and advised them to chose Ampe if they cannot play football, hockey or swim.

Ampe is a simple but energy-driven game played by school-age children. It originated from Ghana and also played in other neighbouring countries. It is played by two or more people and requires no equipment.

The first-ever Olympic Agora will commemorate the cultural aspect of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, featuring a permanent, site-specific legacy sculpture by French artist Xavier Veilhan; a photography installation by Japanese artist Rinko Kawauchi; multimedia installations by Japanese artist Makoto Tojiki and Canadian studio Moment Factory; a series of new artworks by Olympian and Paralympian Artists-in-Residence; and an exhibition of treasures from the permanent holdings of The Olympic Museum. Virtual tours and digital offerings will unite local and international audiences in the Agora experience.

The Olympic Foundation for Culture and Heritage (OFCH) announces the programme for its inaugural Olympic Agora, set to take place around the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 in the heart of the host city. On view from 1 July to 15 August 2021, the new initiative will present a series of art installations and an exhibition on the Olympic spirit and ideals, leading with the landmark commission of a permanent, site-specific sculpture by French artist Xavier Veilhan.

Resulting from Olympic Agenda 2020, the IOC’s strategic roadmap for the future of the Olympic Movement, the Olympic Agora will realise a key recommendation to “further blend sport and culture” during and between editions of the Olympic Games through onsite and digital culture programmes. Spearheaded by the OFCH, the IOC’s division for arts, culture and heritage, the project is inspired by the public assembly spaces—or agoras—of Ancient Greece.

Located throughout Tokyo’s historic Nihonbashi district, the Olympic Agora will feature installations by Japanese artists Rinko Kawauchi and Makoto Tojiki, as well as an exhibition of works by six Olympian and Paralympian Artists-in-Residence. In addition, the Olympic Agora will present a participatory multimedia installation by Montreal-based studio Moment Factory, and an exhibition of treasures from The Olympic Museum’s permanent collection in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Since its initial conception, the programme has been adapted to ensure staff and visitor safety, in compliance with local and national COVID-19 rules and countermeasures. In line with the prevailing regulations, visitor numbers will be limited and strictly controlled. In addition, onsite installations and activations will be complemented by a robust digital programme, including virtual exhibitions and artist talks, available on the Olympic Agora website and The Olympic Museum’s social media channels for local and global audiences.

OFCH Director Angelita Teo said of the Olympic Agora: “Commemorating the history and enduring cultural impact of the Olympic Movement on the world, the Olympic Agora will serve as a hub for the cultivation, exploration and promotion of the Olympic values. In this unprecedented moment, the Olympic Agora is a symbol of determination, overcoming challenges and international cooperation; of the power of sport and art to carry us in times of crisis.”

To mark the opening of the Olympic Agora ahead of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, the OFCH has commissioned Veilhan, who represented France at the 57th Venice Art Biennale in 2017, to create a permanent installation interpreting the Olympic values. Known for his exhibitions challenging viewers’ perceptions, Veilhan will present a life-sized sculptural work entitled The Audience, consisting of five human figures of various ages, genders and nationalities gathered in sport spectatorship. This legacy sculpture will be unveiled on 30 June, a day before the public opening of the Olympic Agora.

Veilhan said of The Audience: “The sculpture is intentionally a tribute to the audience of the Olympic Games, going beyond the sporting feats that are usually celebrated and bringing the focus to non-heroic figures, to highlight the importance of the public.” The artist continued: “This year in particular, the public—the audience—is somewhat the missing star of the Olympic Games. The Audience is not only the title of my work, but is also the summary of the current situation that we are all undeniably living through. It is for me a reason to give existence to this international public, who may be absent physically but all the more watching throughout the world. The sculpture will be its ambassador.”

The Audience comes as part of a series of artist commissions for the IOC’s Olympic Art Visions, an initiative directed by the OFCH. The programme engages leading contemporary artists to reinterpret the Olympic values for global audiences. In 2018, the OFCH commissioned Argentine conceptual artist Leandro Erlich to create a large-scale, temporary installation inaugurating the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires.

At the Olympic Agora, leading Japanese photographer Rinko Kawauchi will also present 16 never-before-seen photographs from Olympism Made Visible, a global fine-art photography project launched by the OFCH to illustrate the impact of sport in community service. Commissioned by the OFCH in 2019, the exhibition, entitled What Is the Joy of the Future? Works from Olympism Made Visible, documents an initiative of the Japanese Olympic Committee to connect Olympic athletes with disaster-affected communities following Japan’s 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. The photographs, taken during Kawauchi’s visit to Fukushima in 2019, are “a testament to the healing power of sport and the fragile and precious gifts of nature,” said the artist. In 2021, Kawauchi was shortlisted for the prestigious Prix Pictet award in photography and sustainability.

Nearby at Fukutoku Plaza, Makoto Tojiki’s large-scale light sculpture Solidarity and Collaboration takes inspiration from the relay race in track and field. Prompted by the global pandemic, the installation, conceived especially for the Olympic Agora, will feature two monumental figures in relay motion, in a timely exploration of collaboration, shared responsibility and human potential in team play.

The OFCH will also present The Noren Curtains, an exhibition of original works by five Olympian and one Paralympian artists: Ciara Michel (Great Britain, Volleyball, London 2012); Slaven Dizdarević (Slovak Republic, Track and Field, Beijing 2008); Kelly Salchow MacArthur (USA, Rowing, Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004); Gregory Burns (USA, Swimming, Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000); Roald Bradstock (Great Britain, Track and Field, Los Angeles 1984 and Seoul 1988); and Hannah Wilkinson (New Zealand, Football, London 2012 and Rio 2016). In a tribute to the Japanese noren, the traditional curtain-like fabric typically hung in shop entrances, each artist will contribute a series of panel “curtains” on the Olympic spirit and values. Each curtain series will illustrate works in the artist’s preferred medium, spanning photography, painting, graffiti and graphic design.

“All my life I have been an artist and an athlete—two seemingly polar opposite pursuits,” said Bradstock, who represented Great Britain in the men’s javelin event at the 1984 and 1988 Summer Olympics. “Then 25 years ago, I realised that sport and art are far more similar than they are different. When I came to this realisation, everything changed for me. It changed my approach to my sports training and how and what I created in my art studio,” said Bradstock.

In addition, The Olympic Museum in Lausanne, the world’s largest archive of the Olympic Games, will present the special exhibition The Olympic Spirit. The exhibition will celebrate some of the most iconic moments in the history of the Games, showcasing 145 artefacts from The Museum’s collection in three main sections: “History and symbols”, “Olympic values expressed by athletes” and “The unifying power of Olympism”. Highlights include a complete set of Summer Games medals and torches, including the medals for Tokyo 2020, and select costumes from past Opening Ceremonies.

The Montreal-based studio Moment Factory will also present the interactive multimedia installation Podium Memories. Reflecting on moments of perseverance, solidarity and team play at the Olympic Games through the years, the installation will feature three deconstructed Olympic podiums, which visitors will be invited to “activate” with their silhouettes in dynamic shapes and vibrant colours. By moving their bodies in relation to the podiums, visitors can browse through a curated display of rarely seen images, animated pictograms and audiovisual footage from the Olympic archives.

In addition, residents and visitors to Nihonbashi will have the opportunity to view iconic posters from the Olympic Games throughout the district, as well as a large-scale Olympic gold medal installation at the atrium at Mitsui Tower. As the Olympic Agora’s Official Partner, Mitsui Fudosan will deliver comprehensive support to the Olympic Agora complex in Nihonbashi.

Mitsui Fudosan President and CEO Masanobu Komoda said: “We are very pleased that Nihonbashi will hold the world’s first Olympic Agora, and are truly honoured to contribute to this exceptional project as the Official Partner. The event will showcase the culture, history, significance and values of the Olympics, and promote the integration of sport and culture—a vital element of the Olympic Movement. Through the Olympic Agora’s digital programmes, I hope that audiences around the globe can experience both, the beating heart of Nihonbashi and the Olympic Spirit.”

Virtual tours of all Olympic Agora presentations and related programming will be available to local and international audiences free of charge on www.olympics.com/olympic-agora.
