The annual charity peace cup match played in honour of Dr. Nii Ayi Bonte II, the Gbese Mantse and Adonten of the Ga State has been launched on Thursday in Accra.

This year will see defending champions, Accra Hearts of Oak and Kpando Heart of Lions playing for honours on August 17, 2025 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

At stake is a giant trophy plus prizes for Best Player, Best Defender and Best Goalkeeper.

Mr. Samuel Anim Addo, the organizer said the 2025 edition is a special one to promote tourism, peace and unity in the country.

He noted that the there would be a float to out door the cup and create awareness.

He urged football fans to come to the stadium and patronise the match to boast tourism and the rich heritage of the Ga people and Ghanaians in general.

He hinted that the organizers are in talks with musicians like Bukom Banku, Tinny, King Jerry, Klala and others to entertain the fans.

He announced the gate fee for Popular Stand as only 5ghc, while the VIP will go for 100ghc.

Nii Armah Okpa, Ayaalolo and Korle Wonko chief who represented the Gbese Mantse gave some background on the ban on drumming and noise making that preceded the Homowo Festival and the need for development in peace and unity.

Representatives of Hearts of Oak and Heart of Lions boasted about their chances.

While Mr.Kwame Opare Addo, the PRO of the Phobians promised a sweet repeat, Mr. Stephen Botchway of Heart of Lions noted that they will revenge last year's defeat with a victory within duration time.

The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) have sent a goodwill message to Jonathan Mbanugu otherwise known as Jon Power who has a record of 17 fights, 15 wins, one draw and one loss. 14 of his wins came by knock out ahead of his WBO Global Light heavyweight title fight against Alban Bermeta of Albania (19-0-1, 15 KOs) this Friday, 11 July, 2025 at the Tirana Lake Amphitheatre, Tirana, Albania.

"The GBA is confident in the ability of Mbanugu to deliver on such occasions when the stakes are high. We want to assure him (Mbanugu) of the nation’s support as he attempts to bring the title to Ghana," said a statement signed by Roger Barnor, Acting President, GBA.

The statement was issued via the new Communications Directorate.

Mbanugu is from the stable of Osibor Management and Mr. Gordon Frimpong is confident of victory.

He said Power is now better than one year ago as he keeps learning and improving after every fight.

"We will win and come back victorious to face Ambitious Tilapia" he noted.

The upcoming 'Best of Bukom Boxing' bill has a number of mouth watering pairings like Stephen Coffie against Dwamena Kesse in a Super Featherweight contest.

Both boxers have traded tough words and fans expect them to trade criss cross blows in the ring.

The two boxes are equally matched in terms of records or fights.

Dwamena is 5-1-1 while Coffie who lost his last bout is 6-1-1. They have promised to teach other lessons and it is only the ring that can decide.

It is happening at the Bukom Boxing Arena on August 23 and it is the debut event of Bishop Promotions.

Other fighters on the programme are Commonwealth and African Games medalist Joseph Commey versus Victor Kuwornu for the National Lightweight Championship,

Abbey Kenya will clash with Nigerian Sunday Adeleye in a testing venture while Issac Commey fights Isaac Commey in 'the revenge', an elimination to the National Welterweight crown.

Pride of Ashiaman, Sampson Segbedzi who holds the National Welterweight title is on the bill.

The weigh in is scheduled for August 22.

A new documentary titled Roots of the Culture is set to premiere on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the Nima Maamobi Community Learning Centre in Accra. The documentary film follows Bboy Lyricx, a Ghanaian dancer,cultural innovator and entrepreneur as he traces the African roots of hiphop and introduces the world to his Afrobreak concepts, a dance philosophy that fuses traditional African movement with the energy of breakin’ and elements of Hiphop.
More than just a style, Afrobreak is a cultural reclamation - a return to the ancestral rhythms that shaped hiphop long before it took root in the Bronx. Through personal stories of other African Hiphop practitioners , dance footage, and community voices, the documentary highlights how movement can be a tool for identity, resistance, and empowerment.
The premiere event will also feature a street art photo exhibition, Afrobreak music album listening, and a live drum & dance showcase — celebrating the deep connection between African traditions and global street culture.
Roots of the Culture is produced by Africa Breaking Academy and calls on the world to recognize Africa not only as the origin of rhythm, but as a creative force shaping the future of hip-hop.

Nii Gonti Adjor 1 aka Nii Adama Addy has been co-opted onto the reconstituted board of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA). He is owner of The Gym and former trainer / manager of Joseph Agbeko.

Dr. Eric Tetteh and Lawyer Sam Laryea have also been named onto the board following the withdrawal of John Marfo.

Meanwhile Andy Nortey Sports Editor at Ghanaian Times, Sammy Heywood Okine aka General One and Prince Dornu Leiku of Graphic Sports and Dornu’s Corner fame have been named to the Communications Desk.

Ag President Roger Barnor hinted that plans are in the pipeline to hold the Extra Ordinary Congress on july 19 which the National Sports Authority (NSA) has not barred from taking place.

After consultations with stakeholders, the boxing fraternity has come to a conclusion that they can manage their affairs and they do not need an interim committee to steer affairs.

"We are very capable, we call for reconciliation, peace and unity" said Roger Barnor.

The board is now made of Roger Barnor, Lord Acquaye. Shadrack Acquaye (Technical Director). Carl Lokko, Alhaji Murtala Tofiki, Micheal Neequaye, Nii Gonti, Micheal Tetteh, Dr. Eric Tetteh, Lawyer Sam Laryea and Andrews Nortey (PRO).

Abu Kamoko aka ‘Ambitious Bukom Tilapia’ has challenged Jonathan Mbanugu for a fight to determine who is who. According to Tilapia who is the first son of the popular former boxer Bukom Banku, there have been calls by the boxing public for Ghanaian boxers to fight each other and put an end to fixed or arranged fights.

“I want to fight and beat Jon Power, if he killed a Nigerian boxer, late Gabriel Olusewagun Olanrewaju in the ring and everyone is afraid of him, I am ready to face and beat him squarely, I am not afraid of him” he said on his social media platform.

Meanwhile, the manager of Jonathan Mbanugu, Mr. Gordon Frimpong aka Osibor has accepted the challenge and appealed to Legacy Rise Sports to put the bout on.

“We are also more than ready to fight Kamoko” he expressed.

For their records, Mbanugu has 15 wins, one loss and one draw, while Kamoko has won all his four professional bouts.

Bukom boxing fans are also happy to hear and cannot wait to watch and cheer their idols.

After the much talked about ‘Battle of the Beasts’ on Friday June 13th, Legacy Rise have promised to return in December and Kamoko who was the star that many people did not watch fight due a poor show by Jacob Dickson against Andrew Tabiti which forced many fans to leave the arena before his bout with Stephen Ackon says he will give the best of himself.
