… Predicts ‘No Vaccine, No Travel’ Rule Soon

Mr. Herbert Mensah, President of the Ghana Rugby Association (GRA), says the government’s idea to acquire Coronavirus vaccines for Ghanaians must be commended.

According to the ace Sports Administrator and Philanthropist, Ghanaians can only be protected from the pandemic through the vaccine which has been the only solution worldwide to curb the spread of the virus.

“The movement of the right direction is certainly the question of vaccinations,” he noted

Herbert Mensah, a former Asante Kotoko Chairman indicated that the numerous conspiracy theories surrounding the vaccine are all made-up to scare people.

“It is a global world; it is not a world that we sit down with our conspiracy theories that we aren’t going to take a jab. We are all in a global world.”

“I say it to all my friends it is only a matter of time some countries will turn around and say without the vaccine you cannot get on the plane, without the vaccine you can’t attend the theatre, the restaurant among others," he predicted in a video while addressing issues of COVID vaccination.

The Ghanaian businessman however lauded the Akufo-Addo led government for acquiring the vaccines and making sure that the majority of the citizens are all vaccinated.

“We are blessed to have such a leader,” he noted – adding that “I understand from experts that the vaccine is safe and good.”

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, March 3, 2021/ -- WHAT initially started as the fiercest race for the presidency of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has evolved into a peace treaty among the candidates vying for the position.

This is anticipated to result in unity among the rivals and the betterment of the beautiful game in the largest confederation affiliated to the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA).

The race that was initially among four candidates thus could culminate in South African businessman and club owner, Patrice Motsepe, emerging as the new CAF president.

The elections for the presidency are set for Rabat, Morocco on March 12.

Coincidentally, the Moroccan capital city has been the scene of a peace treaty among the contenders for the race to succeed disgraced Madagascan, Ahmad Ahmad, as the CAF president.

Besides Mamelodi Sundowns owner Motsepe, other aspirants are Jacques Anouma (Ivory Coast), Senegalese Augustin Senghor and Ahmad Yahya from Mauritania.

Fouzi Lekjaa, the president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), has brokered the accord uniting the contenders.

He recently invited the four candidates and encouraged them to pledge unity instead of further widening divisions triggered by the battle for votes.

Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, has also been preaching unity among football leaders during his tour of several African countries.

The CAF president is automatically a deputy to the FIFA leader.

Sources close to the CAF presidential race confirmed that an agreement was settled and a document signed according to which the other candidates will support Motsepe.

Senghor and Yahya would be his deputies while Anouma would be the presidential advisor.

This arrangement would be unprecedented.

Sources said Motsepe had emerged as the favourite for FIFA because of his untainted record and the fact that he has no links to the old management of CAF.

“Patrice Motsepe is a man of word, principles and high moral standards,” a president of a sub-Saharan African football federation has been quoted as saying.

“He (Motsepe) would never be in anyone’s service except for the 54 federations who compose CAF. He has a solid plan to bring CAF to the top of football world,” the federation president said.

There is also belief that since he (Motsepe) is already wealthy, the billionaire businessman of Tswana descent is not aiming to enrich himself through the presidency of CAF.

“He decided to commit his time and efforts to this when he doesn’t need money or recognition. He does it for pure love of football and Africa,” the senior official said.

A president of a North African Federation was quoted as saying the presence of Senghor and Yahya as Vice-Presidents ensured that a truly pan-African view was taken into account.

“They have the experience and were inside CAF so (they) know what needs to be changed fast in order to get us on the right track”, said the federation leader.

Last week, Motsepe launched his ten-point Action Plan manifesto, called Building African Football to be Best in the World.

He said investing in developing and growing football in each African country and building partnerships and sponsorships with the private sector as well as other potential partners formed the basis of his blueprint.

THE Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF) is seriously considering offering medical insurance to its athletes soon.

This came to light when a five-member executive of the GWF spearheaded by its new president Jerry Ahmed Shaib, paid a working visit to the lifters at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday - and also took the opportunity to strike an acquaintance.

During a brief interface after watching the lifters participate in the second of their grilling domestic trials, Mr Shaib promised among others, to put them on medical insurance.

"We're seriously looking at putting you on a medical insurance; talking about the committed ones among you, so that you'll be covered during competitions.

"This insurance isn't for those who come to training today and don't show up for the next 20 to 30 days," said, Mr Shaib, who succeeded Mr Ben Nunoo Mensah, warning that such athletes would have their names expunged from the list.

Mr Shaib, who doubles as CEO of the Coastal Development Authority (CODA), also guaranteed that the GWF was going to take delivery of gym equipment by the end of the week.

The training equipment arrived at the Tema port some four months ago.

The GWF boss announced that plans were afoot to give the lifters some training allowance, insisting again that only committed athletes would benefit from the package.

It was also disclosed that lifters with the requisite qualifications would be enrolled into the military and other security services.

Other GWF executives present were Messrs Ben Addy (secretary general), Gideon Sackey (treasurer) Mrs Edith Agyepong (deputy treasurer) and Joe Sintim Aboagye (board member).

The weightlifting team is training inexhaustibly ahead of some domestic and international competitions under the tutelage of head coach Michael Abotsie.

Weightlifting produced eight of the 13 medals clinched by Ghana at the 12th African Games held in Rabat, Morocco, 2019.

National Lightweight Champion, Michael ‘Bullet’ Ansah, has predicted a fifth-round knockout win over rival Sheriff ‘One Time’ Quaye in their Independence Day trilogy clash at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra on Saturday.

Ansah lost a controversial split points decision to Quaye in 2018 before coming back to earn a knockout win in a rematch the following year, but this time he is confident his nemesis does not have the quality to match him in their third bout.

This weekend's third clash should settle arguments over which of the two boxers is the strongest but the stakes are higher this time as it serves as a Commonwealth lightweight title eliminator after they had two previous bouts in October 2018 and March 2019.

Ansah jabs

Speaking to the media yesterday, Ansah taunted his opponent, saying he would teach Quaye a lesson in the sport because he was yet to face a dangerous boxer in the division.

“I will beat him and he knows it,” Ansah said and added: “What does he have in the ring that can trouble me? I don’t see anything from him that will shake me in the ring.”

“I have fought all the tough lightweights in the country and Sheriff Quaye is not one of them. I want to urge the supporters to come early because I don’t see the fight going past five rounds.”

Quaye's counter-punch

However, Quaye debunked his opponent's assertion and maintained he had faced all the credible boxers in the lightweight division, with only former world champions Richard Commey and Emmanuel ‘Gameboy’ Tagoe as the best Ghanaian boxers at 135 pounds.

Quaye noted that he was ready to prove a point to Ansah in their third fight for both the bragging rights and a shot at the Commonwealth title. He assured boxing enthusiasts that they would see a different boxer in the ring on Saturday night.

“Bullet must ensure he fights till round five before he can stop me. That is one thing he forgets whenever he promises his knockout win against me.

Pre Order Ghana Year Book 2021

“Everyone must expect a different Sheriff Quaye on Saturday because I am really prepared for the fight. It is going to be war and I am definitely up for it,” Quaye said.

For his part, fight promoter, Mr Alex Ntiamoah Boakye of the Box Office Sports Promotions, announced the cancellation of a scheduled IBF Africa super lightweight championship between Ghana’s Robert ‘Stopper’ Quaye and Prince Dlomo of South Africa.

He said Quaye would instead fight Richard Amenfu in a 10-round contest, while undefeated featherweight, Alfred ‘Bukom Bomber’ Lamptey will slug it out with veteran George Krampah for the West Africa Boxing Union (WABU) title.

“Unfortunately, Robert Quaye’s South African opponent couldn’t travel for the fight and that means the bout has been cancelled.”

Supporting bouts

Other undercards on the night will be a national featherweight championship clash involving undefeated John Laryea and Kamarudeen Boyefio, Holy Dorgbetor versus Edward Kambassa in a featherweight contest while Daniel Aduku faces Naimou Aziz Samson slug it out in a super welterweight contest.

Theophilus Tetteh will engage Musa Appiah at super bantamweight, Daniel Gorsh and debutant Michael Abban set to fight yet to be announced opponents.
